Redlands Police Department

If a family member, a loved one or you have been arrested by or are being investigated by the Redlands Police Department / San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department operating in Redlands, it can cause a lot of worries, mostly just from the uncertainty of what will happen or can happen.  Moreover, one is dependent upon the accuracy, honesty and competence of a police officer, who may or may not be experienced or have the same sense of urgency as you in having the police report properly written.

We at Greg Hill & Associates believe it is prudent to know a few more things before interacting with any branch of law enforcement.  It can be good to know the size of the police or sheriff’s department, the area’s demographics, a bit of history about the town, city or area, and the most common types of crimes the department investigates to make one’s communication with law enforcement more meaningful, more savvy and perhaps, more respectful.  This can lead to a better outcome than if one lacks such perspective and makes assumptions that may be wrong.

The City of Redlands Police Department is located at 1270 West Park Avenue in Redlands.  It is a medium to large station with ninety-one sworn police officers and forty-seven civilian support personnel assigned to it.  Additionally, the department boasts a robust Citizen Volunteer Unit with approximately forty members who provide increased police visibility and crime deterrence through vacation house checks, after-hours commercial patrols, and almost constant random patrol in marked cars. 

The City of Redlands is 36.24 square miles and has a population of 73,168 as of the 2020 census.

Redlands is a rather charming city in San Bernardino County.  Local landmarks include the A. K. Smiley Public Library, a Moorish-style library built in 1898, and the Redlands Bowl, built in 1930 and home of the oldest continuously free outdoor concert series in the United States. Located behind the Smiley Library is the Lincoln Shrine, the only memorial honoring the "Great Emancipator", the sixteenth president, Abraham Lincoln, west of the Mississippi River. 

Famous homes include "America's Favorite Victorian," the Morey Mansion, on Terracina Boulevard, and the Kimberly Crest House and Gardens, a home museum featured on the PBS series "America's Castles." Named after the family that purchased the house, the owners of Kimberly Clark (makers of paper goods and Kleenex), it is a beautiful mansion set high on a hill overlooking the whole valley.  

Redlands is still regarded as the "Jewel of the Inland Empire."

For arrests along Interstate 10, State Route 210 or Highway 38 crossing Redlands, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will normally handle this work, although one may be thereafter transported to the Redlands Police Department for processing, a breath test (if a DUI) and booking.  The person may also be held at the Redlands jail until bail is posted or the person is transferred to the Central Detention Center in San Bernardino).

As of 2020, Redlands’s population was 44.0% non-Hispanic white, 8.1% Asian, 6.3% African American and 36.8% Hispanic.

Most cases arising out of the Redlands Police Department’s areas of responsibility are brought at the San Bernardino Hall of Justice at 4100 Main Street in downtown San Bernardino.  

Over the last 25 years, our office has not handled any cases arising out of Redlands and prosecuted in the San Bernardino Hall of Justice.  However, we would expect such cases to include, but not be limited to DUI, violation of a protective order, domestic violence, shoplifting and possession of and / or sales of a controlled substance.  

Nonetheless, we have received phone calls from people in Redlands asking about hiring a criminal defense attorney.  We find that locals to the Redlands often distrust local criminal defense attorneys as being social friends with prosecutors and judges, so they are unwilling to fight too hard to preserve their friendships, so we are considered as counsel instead because we are not located in Redlands and presumably have no such ties or loyalties.
