Orange County Sheriff's Department - Stanton Station

If a loved one, a family member or you have been arrested by or are being investigated by the Stanton Police Department, it can cause one to feel quite flustered, mostly just from fear of the unknown.  Moreover, one is dependent upon the accuracy, honesty and competence of a police officer, who may or may not be experienced or have the same sense of urgency as you.

Facing such a situation, knowing the bail amount (if any) associated with the offense or offenses at issue if police deny an own recognizance (OR) release may help ease one’s anxiety.  It is also calming to know what evidence is needed to convict one for the crime or crimes that allegedly took place, the defenses possible and the sentence a judge can impose if one is convicted of the crime or crimes.

We at Greg Hill & Associates believe it is prudent to know a few more things before interacting with any branch of law enforcement.  It can be good to know the size of the police or sheriff’s department, the area’s demographics, the most common types of crimes the department investigates and just a bit about the area’s history to make one’s communication with law enforcement more meaningful, more savvy and perhaps, more respectful.  This can lead to a better outcome than if one lacks such perspective.

This article is presented with these goals in mind.

The Stanton station of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department is a small station with 28 sworn deputy sheriffs and seven civilian support personnel assigned to it.

The Stanton station is responsible for patrolling the City of Stanton, which is 3.10 square miles and has a population of 37,962 as of 2020.  The city was named after Former Speaker of the California State Assembly Phillip Ackley Stanton, who assisted in the incorporation of the city in 1911.

Like Westminster to its south, there are a lot of small “pocket parks” in the city.  74% of residents live within a 10-minute walk of a park.  Stanton has ten such “pocket parks.”

There are no freeways crossing through Stanton, which is a city north of the 22 Freeway (the “Garden Grove Freeway”) and south of Interstate 91 (“The Artesia Freeway”).  The main street crossing Stanton is Beach Boulevard, also known as Highway 39.  Garden Grove is to the south of Stanton, Cypress is to the west and Anaheim (including Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm to the north.

As of 2010, the city’s population was 21.8% non-Hispanic white, 23.1 Asian, 2.2% African American and 50.8% Hispanic.  According to the 2010 United States Census, Stanton had a median household income of $50,542, with 16.9% of the population living below the federal poverty line.

According to Neighborhood Scout, the crime rate in Stanton is considerably higher than the national average across all communities in America from the largest to the smallest, although at 25 crimes per one thousand residents, it is not among the communities with the very highest crime rate.  The chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime in Stanton is 1 in 41.  Based on FBI crime data, Stanton is not one of the safest communities in America. Relative to California, Stanton has a crime rate that is higher than 71% of the state's cities and towns of all sizes.

Most cases arising out of the Stanton Police Department’s areas of responsibility are brought at the Westminster Courthouse, but some are also brought at the Central Justice Center at 700 Civic Center Driver West in downtown Santa Ana.  Cases that may be filed at the Central Justice Center instead of at the Westminster Courthouse would be very serious cases needing specialized prosecutors trained in handling such cases.

Over the last 25 years, our office has handled perhaps 5 cases arising out the Stanton Police Station and brought in the Westminster Courthouse, although we have no specific recollection of any single case.  Such cases would most likely vary from DUI to solicitation of prostitution, to domestic violence, to public intoxication, to shoplifting.
