San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department - Central Station (Grand Terrace & Loma Linda)

If a loved one, a family member, a friend or you have been arrested by or are being investigated by the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department from the city-operated Grand Terrace - Central Station, it can cause a lot of angst, mostly just from uncertainty of what will happen or can happen.  Moreover, one is dependent upon the honesty, accuracy and competence of a sheriff’s deputy, who may or may not be experienced or have the same sense of urgency as you in having the police report properly written.  

Facing such a situation, knowing the bail amount (if any) associated with the offense or offenses at issue if police deny an own recognizance (OR) release may lower that uncertainty.  It is also valuable to know what evidence is needed to convict one for the crime or crimes that allegedly took place, the defenses possible and the sentence a judge can impose if one is convicted of the crime or crimes.  

We at Greg Hill & Associates believe it is well worth the time to know a few more things before interacting with any branch of law enforcement.  It can be helpful to know the size of the police or sheriff’s department, the area’s demographics, a bit of history about the town, city or area, and the most common types of crimes the department investigates to make one’s communication with law enforcement more meaningful, more savvy and perhaps, more respectful.  This can lead to a better outcome than if one lacks such perspective and makes assumptions that may be wrong.

The City of Grand Terrace operates the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department station in Grand Terrace.  The Grand Terrace - Central station is located at 655 East Third Street in the downtown San Bernardino area.  It is the oldest station in San Bernardino County.

It is a large station with, we estimate, 150 sworn deputies and forty civilian support personnel assigned to it.  The deputies assigned to this station provide law enforcement services to the unincorporated (largely rural) areas of the central valley including; Arrowhead Farms, Colton, Devore, Muscoy and Glen Helen Amphitheater.  In addition, Central Station is responsible for contract law enforcement in the cities of Grand Terrace and Loma Linda, as well as the San Manuel Indian Reservation and Casino.

The contract city of Grand Terrace incorporated in 1978.  It is known as “The Blue Mountain City.”  The city is known for its hospitality and community-oriented residents. This is evident by its six parks, over forty-one acres of park space and an abundance of sports/recreation programs.  In 2007, Money Magazine listed the city on its “Top 100 Best Places to Live In.”

The contract city of Loma Linda, Spanish for “Beautiful Hill” incorporated in 1970.  It is 7.8 square miles, including the world-renowned Loma Linda University Hospital and Medical Center, Loma Linda University School of Medicine, The Jerry L. Pettis Veteran’s Hospital (serving 65,000 veterans yearly), National Center for Health/Wellness Research, the Ronald McDonald House, ten parks, five schools and 850 acres of open space.  Loma Linda was rated one of the healthiest cities in the United States.

Established in 1891, San Manuel is eight hundred acres of land encompassing fifty-one housing units, a 480,000 square foot casino, two multi-level parking structures, and a private motorcycle track.  With a population of about two hundred residents, San Manuel provides its own fire department, armed security, and funds law enforcement presence on the reservation, casino, and surrounding community. 

 
San Manuel’s Department of Public Safety works closely with assigned deputies and the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office. San Manuel recently expanded and opened up the new Yaamava Resort & Spa, a full service seventeen story hotel with 432 guest rooms and concert event center.

For arrests along Interstate 215 or Interstate 10 crossing the Grand Terrace – Central Station areas of responsibility, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will normally handle this work, although one may be thereafter transported to the Grand Terrace - Central Station for processing, a breath test (if a DUI) and booking.  The person may also be held at the Grand Terrace - Central Station jail until bail is posted or the person is transferred to the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga, High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto, Glen Helen Detention Center in Devore, or the Central Detention Center (San Bernardino).

Most cases (excluding federal matters) arising out of the Grand Terrace - Central station areas of responsibility are brought at the San Berardino Hall of Justice at 4100 Main Street in downtown San Bernardino.  

Over the last 25 years, our office has handled perhaps twenty cases arising out of Grand Terrace - Central area and prosecuted in the San Bernardino Hall of Justice Courthouse.  Such cases have included shoplifting, reckless driving, possession of a controlled substance and many post-conviction matters.  We would expect other cases to include, but not be limited to DUI, violation of a protective order, domestic violence, unauthorized possession of a firearm and grand theft.  

Nonetheless, we have received phone calls from people in the Grand Terrace – Central Station area of responsibility asking about hiring a criminal defense attorney.  We find that locals to the Grand Terrace - Central Station area often distrust local criminal defense attorneys as being social friends with prosecutors and judges, so they are unwilling to fight too hard to preserve their friendships, so we are considered as counsel instead because we are not located in Grand Terrace - Central and presumably have no such ties or loyalties.
