Palm Springs Police Department

If a family member, a loved one, you have been arrested by or are being investigated by the Palm Springs Police Department, it can cause a lot of anxiety, mostly just from fear of the unknown of what will happen or can happen.  Moreover, one is dependent upon the competence, honesty and  accuracy of a police officer, who may or may not be experienced or have the same sense of urgency as you in having the police report properly written.

Facing such a situation, knowing the bail amount (if any) associated with the offense or offenses at issue if police deny an own recognizance (OR) release may lower one’s apprehension.  It is also prudent to know what evidence is needed to convict one for the crime or crimes that allegedly took place, the defenses possible and the sentence a judge can impose if one is convicted of the crime or crimes.

We at Greg Hill & Associates believe it is smart to know a few more things before interacting with any branch of law enforcement.  It can be good to know the size of the police or sheriff’s department, the area’s demographics, a bit of history about the town, city or area, and the most common types of crimes the department investigates to make one’s communication with law enforcement more meaningful, more savvy and perhaps, more respectful.  This can lead to a better outcome than if one lacks such perspective and makes assumptions.

This article is presented with these goals in mind.

The Palm Springs Police Department is a large force with one hundred sworn police officers and forty-nine civilian support personnel assigned to it.

The Palm Springs Police Department is responsible for patrolling the City of Palm Springs, which is almost ninety-six square miles and has a population of 50,000, but that figure doubles during the winter "snowbird" season.  Palm Springs is known worldwide as a destination resort, so in addition to the residents, Palm Springs hosts approximately 2.5 million overnight visitors annually.

Though celebrities still retreat to Palm Springs, many establish residences in other areas of the Coachella Valley.  The city's economy now relies on tourism, and local government is largely supported by related retail sales taxes and the TOT (transient occupancy tax).

The city hosts numerous festivals, conventions, and international events including the Palm Springs International Film Festival.
For arrests along the I-10 freeways crossing Palm Springs, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will normally handle this work, although one may be thereafter transported to the Palm Springs Police Department for processing, a breath test (if a DUI) and booking.  The person may also be held at the Palm Springs jail until bail is posted or the person is transferred to the Riverside County Jail in Banning (called the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility) or Indio (called the John J. Benoit Detention Center).

As of 2010, the city’s population was 67.9% non-Hispanic white, 4.4% Asian, 4.4% African American and 25.3% Hispanic.  During 2009–2013, Palm Springs had a median household income of $45,198, with 18.2% of the population living below the federal poverty line.

Most cases arising out of the Palm Springs Police Department’s areas of responsibility are brought at the Palm Springs Courthouse, but some are also brought at the Riverside Hall of Justice at 4100 Main Street in downtown Riverside.  Cases that may be filed at the Riverside Hall of Justice instead of at the Palm Springs Courthouse would be very serious cases needing specialized prosecutors trained in handling such cases.

Over the last 25 years, our office has handled not one arising out the Palm Springs Police Station and brought in the Palm Springs Courthouse.  However, we would expect such cases to include, but not be limited to DUI, domestic violence, shoplifting, possession and / or sales of a controlled substance, as well as public intoxication and defrauding an innkeeper, particularly in Palm Springs.

We find that locals to the Palm Springs area often distrust local criminal defense attorneys as being social friends with prosecutors and judges, so they are unwilling to fight too hard to preserve their friendships, so folks will call us to possibly hire us instead because we presumably have no such ties or loyalties.

The population of Palm Springs is close to 50,000 people, but that number can double in the winter season.  Palm Springs hosts approximately 2.5 million overnight visitors a year.
