Beverly Hills Police Department

We at Greg Hill & Associates appreciate that you or a loved one may have unpleasant business to handle with the Beverly Hills Police Department.  It may  be that one is under investigation or one has been arrested by the Beverly Hills Police Department.

Besides knowing what bail may be set for one’s release and besides knowing the requirements that a prosecutor must show to reach a conviction (or what a defendant can show as a defense) and the punishment possible, it is also wise to know a bit about the Beverly Hills Police Department itself prior to interacting with officers there.

After all, one’s demeanor when interacting with officers can show respect or at least awareness of the gravity of a possible criminal case, which may be filed at the Airport Courthouse or the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Courts Building (CCB).

The Beverly Hills Police Department is surprisingly big for a city of its size, which is 5.71 square miles.  There are 145 sworn police officers and ninety-five unsworn officers, which is about three times the number per square mile compared to other Los Angeles County cities like Azusa and Arcadia.  There are about 15,000 households in Beverly Hills, as of the 2010 census.

This may be partially explained by certain statistics.  With a crime rate of forty-nine per one thousand residents, Beverly Hills has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes - from the smallest towns to the very largest cities.  One's chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in twenty-one.

The most common crime in Beverly Hills, as of May 2024 reporting, is motor vehicle theft.  The second-most common crime are fraud offenses, closely followed by vandalism.  Assault, which would include domestic violence, are less common than burglaries in Beverly Hills.  Drug offenses and arrests for possession of drug paraphernalia are also common, but less so than the aforementioned crimes.  Theft, including shoplifting, is the only other crime that seems to occur on a regular basis in Beverly Hills.

On January 1, 2022, Beverly Hills became the first city in America to ban the sale of all tobacco products.  Smoking lounges and hotels are exempt from the new law.  The city council passed the law in June 2021.  Flavored tobacco was already banned.

The crime statistics do reflect the wealth and high property values (and high taxes) that Beverly Hills is well known for in popular American culture.  The city is home to Rodeo Drive and the designer brand shopping there, as well as being home to the Spago restaurant, the Beverly Hills Hotel and the Beverly Hilton.  Tourists flock to this area and crimes are committed with such tourists being victims.

Tourists also come to the city to take bus tours of the residential neighborhoods to see the homes of celebrities who lived in Beverly Hills or continue to live there, such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tony Curtis, Ray Charles, President Richard Nixon, Jennifer Anniston, David Spade, Vera Wang and John Rich.

As of the 2010 census, the racial makeup of Beverly Hills was 82.4% White, 8.9% Asian, 4.9% from two or more races and 2.2% African American.  The median age is 43.6 years.

Beverly Hills is home to one Fortune 500 company, Live Nation Entertainment.  Since Augst, 2011, the headquarters of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) has been located in Beverly Hills after a significant film history established close by on the main original studio lots in Culver City. The talent agencies United Talent Agency, William Morris Endeavor, Paradigm Talent Agency, The Gersh Agency and Agency for the Performing Arts have been located in Beverly Hills.

The top employer in the City of Beverly Hills is the City of Beverly Hills itself, with over 1,000 residents being city employees.  The Beverly Hills Unified School District comes in second with about 640 employees, closely followed by the Beverly Hills Hotel with over 630 employees.
