Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department - East Los Angeles Station

If a family member, a loved one or you have been arrested by or are being investigated by the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department (LAPD), East Los Angeles Station, it can cause a lot of anxiety.
Facing such a situation, it can be helpful to know the bail amount (if any) associated with the offense if police deny an own recognizance (OR) release. It is also valuable to know what evidence is needed to convict one for the crime that allegedly took place, the defenses possible and the sentence a judge can impose if one is convicted of the crime.
We at Greg Hill & Associates believe it is good to know a few more things before interacting with any branch of law enforcement. It can be valuable to know the size of the police or sheriff’s department, the area’s demographics, the most common types of crimes the department investigates and just a bit about the area’s history to make one’s communication with law enforcement more meaningful, more savvy and perhaps, more respectful. This can lead to a better outcome than if one lacks such perspective.
This article is presented with this goal in mind.
The East Los Angeles Station is responsible for the City of Commerce, the City of Cudahy, the City of Maywood, the unincorporated areas of Belvedere Gardens, the unincorporated areas of City Terrace, the unincorporated areas of Eastmont, the unincorporated areas of East Los Angeles, the unincorporated areas of Saybrook Park, and the unincorporated areas of the Union Pacific property.
Unincorporated East Los Angeles is 7.48 square miles with a resident population of 126,064. Fifty-six deputies are dedicated to providing patrol service to this community.
The City of Commerce is 6.7 square miles with a resident population estimated at 12,568. The City is primarily industrial with a daytime population estimated at 43,367. During peak business hours, it is estimated that approximately 100,000 persons “pass through” Commerce on a daily basis. Thirty-two deputy personnel and one service area manager (Sergeant) are dedicated to providing patrol services to this community.
Auto theft, burglaries, vandalism and robberies are more common is these areas than in other areas.
The population in these cities is 95.16 percent Hispanic or Latina, the highest of any city or census-designated place in the United States outside of Puerto Rico. Oscar De La Hoya, the famous boxer, is from East Los Angeles.
Gang related crimes are a big issue in the East Los Angeles area. The more well recognized gangs in East Los Angeles include White Fence (along Whittier Boulevard), Primera Flats, Arizona MaraVilla, Choppers 12, City Terrace, East LA 13 and Lopez MaraVilla, although there are over three dozen such gangs. Some of these gangs have no affiliation with the Mexican Mafia.
The Sureños, or Sur 13, the gang of the Mexican Mafia (“La Eme”), is the origin of much of the gang activity in East Los Angeles (and other areas), but as mentioned above, not all Hispanic gang activity. As the reader may be well aware, the Mexican Mafia originated in California prisons in the 1960’s, not in Mexico. It has a reputation for being ruthless and extremely violent.
For traffic matters that arise on the freeways in this area, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) generally handles such matters, not the East Los Angeles Station.
Most cases arising out of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s East Los Angeles Station’s areas of responsibility are brought at the East Los Angeles Courthouses, but some are also brought at the Clara Shortridge Foltz criminal courts building (CCB) at 210 West Temple Street in downtown Los Angeles. Cases that may be filed at CCB instead of at the East Los Angeles Courthouse would be very serious cases needing specialized prosecutors trained in handling such cases.
Our office has handled many shoplifting, DUI, solicitation of prostitution and domestic violence cases arising out the City of Commerce, the City of Cudahy and East Los Angeles in the East Los Angeles Courthouse.
